We have a purpose
To enhance the expertise of maritime professionals, making high-stakes operations safer and more efficient through immersive technologies.
Start with code, proceed in partnership
The foundation of every solution is a deep analysis of real-world operational challenges. Technology is only meaningful when it delivers measurable results, so the focus is always on creating pragmatic and effective tools.
The implementation of new technology is a journey, not a transaction. Success is achieved through a long-term partnership where collaboration, adaptation, and the evolution of the solution continues long after launch.
This approach makes MR & AR truly effective in the maritime world.
This is the way
AEGIR prototype begins
Under the name “ShipSimulator,” development starts on a VR simulator focused solely on crew transfer scenarios.
VARCUS Solutions is founded
Consultations with Estonian maritime schools reveal a wider market potential, leading to the founding of VARCUS Solutions to build a full-scale business.
The pivot to Mixed Reality
The discovery of Varjo headsets opens up a unique niche: a simulator where all interaction happens with real, physical objects.
The ESBEN concept is born
The potential of mixed reality sparks the idea for ESBEN: a navigational assistant that overlays data onto the real world.
First major milestone: AEGIR prototype
The prototype evolves beyond simple handling to a full GWO scenario, incorporating real controls, safety equipment, and a 4-meter ladder.
ESBEN Proof of Concept
Initial tests prove the core concept of a spatial overlay. The first prototype displays a vessel’s course prediction, COG, and SOG.
GWO Certification Achieved
In a world first, our partner Reval Safety Training Center achieves GWO certification for a training course utilizing the AEGIR simulator.
Full-Scale AEGIR Development
With the prototype proven and certified, full-scale development begins to create a product capable of transforming maritime education.
AEGIR 1.0 is Released
AEGIR is released as a full-scale, green-room solution—a modular platform designed for a wide range of training, from safety procedures to ship handling.
Focus Shifts to ESBEN
With the successful launch of AEGIR, the team’s primary focus shifts to the full-scale development of ESBEN.
Partnership with Estonian Maritime Academy
AEGIR is installed at the Estonian Maritime Academy (EMERA) as a key addition to their navigation and ship handling courses.
VARCUS Goes Global
The company begins actively showcasing AEGIR and ESBEN at international exhibitions and conferences, with key support from Enterprise Estonia and StartUp Estonia.
ESBEN’s First Sea Trials
In partnership with Alfons Håkans, ESBEN’s first sea trials begin, testing its functionality in one of the most complex maritime operations: towage.
ESBEN 1.0 Launch
The first version of ESBEN is launched. Developed for Apple Vision Pro, it delivers a true augmented reality experience.
The Future is Augmented
The journey continues. The vision for ESBEN is to integrate all critical data streams into a single, intuitive overlay for the modern mariner.
